Welcome Ingrid Hall to ‘Author 2 Author’ Blog Chat.
Thank you for stopping by, please make yourself at home And we’ll begin.
Tell us a bit about
yourself?
Well, I am from the North
East of England, I have had far too many “ordinary” jobs to count, but
was never able to settle at any of them, because the writing bug just kept on
gnawing away at me! And I have my campaigning head on at the moment,
because there is so much wrong with society, so much that needs fixing! I
want to see more balance. More fairness. I am also a little bit
eccentric!
Aren’t we all hun ;) it’s
what makes us so unique in our writing, we’re perfect no matter the judgement
from others, and you’re perfect just the way you are x
Right todays book we're
chatting about is Granny Irene's
Guide to the Afterlife - Revenge.

Right now Ingrid has
answered this very important questions for me:
How would you describe
'your book?
Now, there’s a question and a half! Well, my book started as the first in a trilogy, but it now looks like it is going to be part of a much longer series. It chronicles the spiritual journey of a working class pensioner who dies, and is confused to suddenly find herself in “Viking Heaven” It is written from the main character’s viewpoint, exactly as she speaks, so it definitely has a strong Northern feel about it, and is not for those who expect their books to be written in Queen’s English! It is a very dark book, tackling a whole range of issues like social injustice, and the exploitation of women and the working classes. There is murder, intrigue, and because several chapters are set in a brothel, then there is also a lot of pornographic sex!
What Genre is your work
mainly? Do you tend to stay in the same vein or are you hoping (if not already)
to explore new ventures?
I have been told that my book doesn’t fit any genre. That it is totally unique. There is a strong mind body spirit/reincarnation feel to it, but there is way much more to it than that! I will be writing more Granny Irene. I will also definitely be writing more books which explore death. I also want to write a series of books based upon the lives of some of Newcastle’s most interesting historical, yet largely unknown characters, and I am also drawn to taking the Icelandic sagas, and giving them a contemporary spin. Beyond that who knows? I write what feels right at the time.
What inspired you to
write 'your book?
I have always been fascinated by the afterlife, and believe myself to be sensitive, and following a period of depression, I decided that I wanted to spend some time writing, eventually Irene’s voice came to me, and that was that!
Who was the easiest
character to write and why? Hardest and why?
Irene was definitely the easiest, because she came to me, and just refused to be ignored! Chloe, was probably the hardest, because initially I had intended the book to be primarily about her, however Irene just sort of drowned her out. I will definitely be writing a book which will explain what happened to Chloe in the 25 years not covered in this book…
Are your characters based
on real people? People you may know or TV/Movie stars?
No.
Without giving anything
away, what is/are your favorite scene(s) in 'your book'?
I love the scenes with the Beserk Brides, and Hel - Queen of the Dead.
If 'your book (s)' had a
theme song, what would it be and why?
“A thousand years” By Christina Perri because it sums up Irene’s relationship with one of the other characters (I am not saying who!!!)
Do you listen to music
while you write your books, if so ... what songs?
No, I need silence. Total silence.
What’s up next for you?
I am currently writing a novella based around a near death experience, I will then be working on more Granny Irene.
What inspired you to be a
writer?
Is there anything in particular that spurred you on? My dad, definitely. He was writing his book ever since I was a child. Unfortunately he died before it could be published, and that is also something else which I am working on, however I need input from other people, but fingers crossed, Dad’s book will see the light of day very soon!
What’s came first the
chicken or the egg? Lol
egg???
Lol I love it, excellent
x
A little background into
your writing: when did you start? What was your first piece?
First published piece, tell us about your general history. I started writing as a teenager, however couldn’t find the stamina to actually complete anything. I then went to several creative writing classes in my twenties, but allowed life to get in the way. I only picked up my writing again a couple of years ago, and 250k words later, Granny Irene made her debut!
Do you have any favorite
books or authors?
I love Philippa Gregory.
Are you working on
anything else besides this?
My novella.
Could you give us a
few words to people who haven’t yet read your book.
Sell your work :)
My work is very dark, very unusual, and is not for those who have set beliefs about the afterlife, and don’t wish to have those beliefs challenged.

Okay
so here’s Ingrid’s book again; Granny Irene’s Guide to the Afterlife:
Blurb:
Told in her own distinct
Northern voice, exactly as she speaks, Granny Irene is not for those who like
their books written in Queens English, nor is for those who are easily
offended, or don't like having their beliefs challenged. However if you are
looking for a unique, quirky, fast paced, central character driven novel then
read on...
Murdered during an emotionally charged argument with her granddaughter Chloe, Granny Irene is furious to find herself in Viking Heaven at the onset of Ragnarok.
Having been told that the fate of the world rests in her hands, disgusted and appalled by the impact of the austerity measures on the ordinary, working classes, racked with guilt over her affair with lover Harry, and confused as to her true identity. Irene returns to North East England, in search of Chloe, and justice. And after a chance encounter with the Nordic Sea Serpent, and her brother Anthony from a life lived in the Seventeenth century, Irene discovers that she has the ability to travel backwards and forwards in time.
She soon embarks upon an amazing spiritual journey, and is overjoyed, and delighted, as she makes new friendships, re-visits her mining roots, vividly recalling the injustices of the miner’s strike of 1984 and the Hester and Burradon pit disasters. The discovery that she is also closely tied to the Nordic Queen of the Dead, Hel, shakes her to the core, and forces her to take stock of her actions, and re-evaluate her beliefs.
As the net closes in on Chloe, working closely with Anthony, and the Beserk Brides, Irene takes drastic action to ensure justice is served and in doing so, also succeeds in bringing down the futuristic right wing government of Totty Tax Tim, and the Panty Pincher, whom she is furious to discover have legalised prostitution, and opened a flagship brothel in her beloved Whitley Bay.
