So I've got the first review...and it's a big 5 stars! This is Conrad Jones doing what he does best...writing a gritty, violent, cleverly constructed crime thriller.
Set against a background of his Liverpool homeland just after 'the troubles'...yes, I'm a scouser too, albeit an 'exiled' one, and worked in the city centre during those troubles...the characters, both goodies and baddies, are well drawn and totally credible.
I'm not going to even precis the story...I don't want to spoil things in any way for future readers...so I'll just say that this is Superintendent Alec Ramsay at his brilliant best.
For those of you who have not yet 'found' Conrad Jones, what are you waiting for? You've got lots to enjoy with the Alec Ramsay series, and the Tank Tankersley series, and even a sort of fantasy/horror stand alone if you're that way inclined.
For those who, like me, have been enjoying Conrad's work for the past 18 months, this new one is fully up to standard. It's a superb read and a must for lovers of somewhat dark,sometime violent crime thrillers.
I can totally recommend it.

I have only read Jones' books featuring Alex Ramsay and have thoroughly enjoyed them all! This is not my favourite of the series but still worthy of 5 stars. Fast paced and all characters are linked in someway which is not always clear at first... Great writing style which just makes you want to read one more chapter, and can clearly imagine this making a great action/gangster movie series. Would recommend to readers who like crime thrillers.

When
did you first start writing?
It’s a long story but here goes! ; He spent a number of years in and around North Wales before starting his career as a trainee manger with McDonalds Restaurants in 1989. He worked in management at McDonalds Restaurants Ltd from 1989-2002, working his way up to Business Consultant (area manager) working in the corporate and franchised departments.
On March 23rd 1993 he was managing the Restaurant in Warrington`s Bridge St when two Irish Republican Army bombs exploded directly outside the store, resulting in the death of two young boys and many casualties. Along with hundreds of other people there that day Conrad was deeply affected by the attack, which led to a long-term interest in the motivation and mind set of criminal gangs. He links this experience with the early desire to write books on the subject. His early novels follow the adventures of an elite counter terrorist unit, The Terrorist Task Force, and their enigmatic leader, John Tankersley, or `Tank` although his later books follow Detective Alec Ramsey and the Major Investigation Team. His novels are set in the North West and North Wales.
In 2007, he set off on an 11-week tour of the USA. The Day before he boarded the plane, Madeleine Mcann disappeared and all through the holiday he followed the American news reports which had little information about her. He didn't realise it at the time, but the terrible kidnap would inspire, The Child Taker years later. During the trip, he received news that his house had been burgled and his work van and equipment stolen. That summer was the year when York and Tewksbury were flooded by a deluge and insurance companies were swamped with claims. They informed him that they couldn't do anything for weeks and that returning home would be a wasted journey. Rendered unemployed on a beach in Clearwater, Florida, he decided to begin his first book, Soft Target. He never stopped writing after that.
He has reached over 200,000 downloads of his thriller novels and has had 7 books on the top 100 kindle charts, 3 number ones and an Amazon clicks Reader's book of the month award.
Did you always want to be a
writer? If not what did you want to be?
I think the desire to be a storyteller was always there.
What drew you to writing
thriller stories?
I write the genre which I love to read. I like horror and thrillers and mine lie somewhere between.
Where does your inspiration
for these stories come from?
I watch the news and when something touches me, it usually becomes a novel.
What has your experience been
like publishing with Thames River Press?
It has been a rollercoaster of emotions as prior to signing with them I was self published and always in control. I found that I have far more experience and knowledge about marketing than my publishers have, hence they asked me to write the non-fiction guides to publish! I keep my back catalogue for myself so that I have several income streams. I thought I had won the lottery when I got a 3 book deal with them but it is far from that. It is early days in our relationship so fingers crossed we will move forward in 2013.
What was your favourite
chapter to write and why?
John Tankersley ‘Tank’ in my first 6 novels. He is just everything a protagonist should be when dealing with terrorists!
Where is your favourite place
to write?
My settee next to my Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Do you have a certain routine
you have for writing? i.e. You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?
I listen to music when I write and I sit on the settee with my laptop on the arm of the chair. It’s not good for my posture but I have written 12 books the same way!
Do you use a computer/laptop
for your first draft or are you a pen and paper writer?
I can’t read my own writing because it’s so bad! I use a laptop.
How do you come up with
characters names and place names in your books?
All the places are real so that comes from research. Lots of the characters are friends or fans who have asked for their names to be in a book! The rest just come to me.
Did you learn anything from
writing your book? What was it?
I learn with every novel. My writing style has changed dramatically from book 1 to book 12!
How long does it usually take
you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
90 days. I use a system which has worked every time for me so I stick to it. I have never gone over that yet!
Can you describe the feeling
you had when you saw your published book for the first time?
Pride, shock, humble and painfully aware that the hard part was yet to come. Marketing your book is far harder than writing them!
Who are some of your favourite
authors?
James Herbert, Stephen King, Stephen Leather, Lee Child, Dan Brown.
Have you ever suffered from a
"writer's block"? What did you do to get past the "block"?
So far I haven’t but that’s because I rewrite so much. I wake up in the morning and the chapters are queuing up in my head. I’ve been lucky so far.
What piece of advice would you
give to a new writer?
Write what you know about, places you know well and write something every day. Set yourself milestones for each day and take it a bite at a time. Be under no illusions that writing the book is the easy part!
Would you share a deep dark
secret about you with us?
I was once bitten during a book signing by a Satanist member of the Order of Nine Angels. They didn’t like the pressure my book ‘A Child for the Devil’ was bringing them. They were kicked off Facebook and Twitter because of my book. Since then I have had four ‘Crucifix’ tattoos........
